Pakistan's olive industry is growing fast, and two regions stand out: the Pothohar plateau around Chakwal in Punjab, and the highlands of Loralai in Balochistan. Both can produce true extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), but climate, soil, and olive varieties give each a different character.
What Makes an Oil "Extra Virgin"?
Under International Olive Council (IOC) and Codex Alimentarius standards, EVOO must be mechanically extracted without chemical solvents and have free acidity of no more than 0.8%. It must also pass sensory tests, with no taste defects. Both regions can meet this standard. The differences below come from where and how the olives are grown and processed.
Chakwal Olive Oil
Chakwal sits in a rain-fed (barani) region with moderate temperatures. Its orchards are mostly planted with introduced cultivars such as Arbequina, Coratina, and Frantoio, alongside grafted wild olive trees.
Typical profile:
Oils from Chakwal's cultivated varieties tend to be smoother and more balanced, with fruity, grassy notes and moderate bitterness and pungency. The exact character depends on the variety and harvest time.
Best for:
Salad dressings and drizzling over finished dishes
Dipping with bread
Light sautéing and everyday cooking
Anyone new to EVOO who prefers a gentler taste
Loralai Olive Oil
Loralai lies at high elevation in Balochistan, with cold winters, dry air, and large temperature swings between day and night. The area is known for wild olive (Olea cuspidata) and for newer plantations.
Typical profile:
Oils from high, dry, cooler regions are often more robust, with stronger bitterness and peppery pungency. These traits usually come from higher polyphenol content, which is also linked to the oil's antioxidant value and shelf stability.
Best for:
Drizzling over grilled meats, soups, and stews
Bold dishes such as pulao, karahi finishing, and roasted vegetables
Health-focused use, such as a daily spoonful, where people prefer a more intense oil
Longer storage, since higher polyphenols generally help resist oxidation
